Sisu

A Finnish concept described as stoic determination, tenacity of purpose, grit, bravery, resilience, and hardiness.

Origin

A Finnish word deriving from sisus (inner organs, "guts"), reflecting its connotation of profound internal fortitude. Early literary references appear in Finnish texts from the 16th century, coinciding with written Finnish's development for religious and scholarly purposes under Swedish rule, where it denoted perseverance and inner resolve amid adversity. In 1745, a Finnish bishop used sisucunda to describe the body region where strong feelings originate. Linguistically, the concept goes back 500 years or more. During the Winter War of 1939–1940, Finnish perseverance against Soviet invasion popularized sisu in English for a generation, held by Finns to express their national character. Recent research has identified both beneficial and harmful sisu—constantly exceeding limits can cause mental and physical harm.
