Saudade

A deep, bittersweet longing for something or someone absent or lost — not just missing them, but feeling the lingering presence of what is no longer there.

Origin

From Old Portuguese soidade, itself derived from Latin solitatem ("solitude"), the word first appears in 13th-century troubadour verse during the reign of King Denis (1279–1325). Its spelling shifted to saudade by association with saudar ("to greet"). Often called the quintessential Portuguese emotion, the concept deepened during the Age of Discoveries, capturing the grief of families whose sailors departed and often never returned.
