Koyaanisqatsi

A vision of modern life as fundamentally out of balance — humanity's relationship with technology and nature seen as one of escalating disharmony, made iconic by the 1982 experimental film of the same name.

Origin

A word from the Hopi language meaning "life out of balance" (also translated as "crazy life" or "life in turmoil"). Director Godfrey Reggio learned the word from Hopi elder David Monongye in the early 1970s and spent seven years (1975–1982) producing the experimental film of the same name with composer Philip Glass and cinematographer Ron Fricke. Francis Ford Coppola lent his name to help present and distribute the film after its 1982 premiere.
