Inemuri

The Japanese concept of taking power naps at work, on the subway, and in other public places, where the practice is seen not as a sign of laziness, but of diligence — that one is working themselves to exhaustion.

Origin

The Japanese term inemuri (居眠り) combines i (居, to be present) and nemuri (眠り, sleep), literally meaning "to be asleep while present." The practice gained prominence during Japan's postwar economic miracle of the 1960s–1980s, when extreme work hours became normalized. University of Cambridge lecturer Brigitte Steger documented the phenomenon during her late-1980s research in Japan. The cultural acceptance has deeper roots in Japanese values influenced by Confucian and Buddhist traditions praising scholars and samurai who sacrificed sleep for duty.
