Origin
From Old Norse hugga (“to comfort”), related to the English word “hug.” Hygge has been central to Danish culture for centuries — Denmark consistently ranks among the world’s happiest countries, and Danes often cite hygge as a factor. The concept went global around 2016 when Meik Wiking’s The Little Book of Hygge became an international bestseller, though Danes note that hygge is felt, not purchased — candles help, but they’re not the point.
