Origin
From the Dutch word gezel ("companion"), which in the medieval guild system referred to a journeyman living and working alongside fellow craftsmen under a master. Over centuries, the adjective gezellig broadened from that sense of shared quarters into a wider cultural ideal of coziness and belonging — one the Dutch consider so particular to their experience that the word is often called untranslatable.
