Second-Order Thinking

Second-Level Thinking

The process of estimating and considering the implications of impacts of a first-order effect (initial effects).

Origin

Investor Howard Marks, co-founder of Oaktree Capital Management, formalized the concept in his 2011 book The Most Important Thing. Drawing from systems thinking, Marks contrasted first-level thinking (simplistic, superficial) with second-level thinking (considering consequences of consequences). Second-order thinkers ask "And then what?"—understanding that interventions often cause unintended harm. The concept builds on recognizing that decisions exist within networks of cause and effect, requiring consideration of downstream implications.
