Fika

A ritual of pausing for coffee, a treat, and unhurried conversation. More than a simple break — it is about slowing down and connecting with the people around you.

Origin

The word originated in 19th-century Sweden as a back-slang inversion of kaffi (coffee), used as code when coffee was repeatedly banned between 1756 and 1817. Once the final ban lifted in 1822, consumption surged and the social ritual around coffee and pastries — fikabröd (fika bread) — became a cornerstone of Swedish culture.
