Strategy Vs. Tactics

Strategy is a set of choices used to achieve an overall objective whereas tactics are the specific actions used when applying those strategic choices.

Origin

Both words trace to ancient Greek military vocabulary — strategia ("generalship," from stratos, army + agein, to lead) and taktike ("art of arrangement"). The formal distinction was most influentially codified by Prussian general Carl von Clausewitz in his posthumous 1832 treatise On War: tactics govern the use of forces in a battle, while strategy governs the use of battles to win the war. The popular quote attributing the distinction to Sun Tzu is almost certainly apocryphal.
