Origin
The concept builds on social comparison theory, first proposed by psychologist Leon Festinger in a 1954 paper published in The Journal of Human Relations. Festinger argued that people evaluate their own abilities and opinions by comparing themselves to others. Earlier foundations trace to Herbert Hyman's 1942 work showing that status assessments depend on one's reference group.
