Red Pill Vs. Blue Pill

The red pill and its opposite, the blue pill, are a popular cultural meme, a metaphor representing the choice between knowledge, freedom, uncertainty and the brutal truths of reality (red pill), and then security, happiness, beauty, and the blissful ignorance of illusion (blue pill).

Origin

The metaphor originates from the 1999 film The Matrix, written and directed by the Wachowskis. In the pivotal scene, Morpheus offers Neo a choice: a blue pill to return to comfortable illusion, or a red pill to see reality. The scene itself nods to Lewis Carroll — Morpheus tells Neo to "stay in Wonderland" and see "how deep the rabbit hole goes" — while drawing on philosophical traditions from Plato's cave allegory to Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation.
