Origin
Austrian-born anthropologist Agehananda Bharati (born Leopold Fischer), a Hindu monk and professor at Syracuse University, coined the term in his 1970 article "The Hindu Renaissance and Its Apologetic Patterns" in the Journal of Asian Studies. His primary examples were not pizza but Indian cultural exports — yoga, guru movements, and Satyajit Ray's films — that gained prestige in India only after Western acclaim.
