Origin

The art of memory traces to a legend involving Simonides of Ceos (c. 556–468 BCE), who, according to Cicero's De Oratore (55 BCE), discovered the method of loci after memorising the seating positions of banquet guests he could identify from their crushed remains. The term derives from ancient Greek μνημονικός (mnemonikos), connected to Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory. The systematic ars memorativa was codified by Roman rhetoricians, fell into disuse after Rome's fall, and was revived by medieval scholars before entering modern pedagogy.
