Origin

Popularized by Alexander Rose of the Long Now Foundation in a talk on organizational continuity. Rose used the phrase to describe the role — often informal and unrecognized — of the individual who actively maintains a group's shared identity, linking it to patterns he observed in the world's longest-lived organizations and family structures.
