Origin
Jerome Bruner introduced the three modes of representation in his 1966 books Toward a Theory of Instruction and Studies in Cognitive Growth, produced at Harvard University's Center for Cognitive Studies. The framework grew from Bruner's earlier work on discovery learning, first sketched in The Process of Education (1960), as he sought to map how children build knowledge through action, image, and symbol in sequence.
