Horror Vacui

The compulsion to fill every available space with detail or decoration, leaving no surface empty. In design, sometimes the most powerful move is restraint.

Origin

Latin for “fear of empty space.” In physics, Aristotle proposed that nature abhors a vacuum — a principle that dominated science until Torricelli and Pascal proved vacuums possible in the 17th century. In art and design, the term describes the compulsion to fill every surface with detail, seen in Islamic geometric patterns, Victorian interiors, and maximalist graphic design.
