Origin

Edmund Arnold, a distinguished American typographer and teacher, developed the Gutenberg Diagram in the 1950s to describe the pattern of Latin reading gravity. The diagram divides a page into four quadrants—primary optical area (top left), strong fallow area (top right), weak fallow area (bottom left), and terminal area (bottom right)—reflecting how readers' eyes naturally move across text-heavy content.
