Origin

The false dilemma has roots in ancient Greek philosophy, particularly in Aristotle's works and those of the Sophists, who used it in rhetoric to simplify complex issues. The Athenian statesman Cleon employed false dilemmas during the Peloponnesian War to present binary choices between empire and destruction. The fallacy lies in a false premise presenting limited options through disjunction, oversimplifying reality. This tendency toward either-or thinking may be built into human language and cognition.
