Origin
The phrase was coined by NPR as listener-facing marketing language, capturing a phenomenon the network's audience had long experienced but never named. By 2002, the network was actively soliciting and archiving listener accounts — selections aired on All Things Considered and other programs. The phrase spread quickly into common usage as shorthand for the power of audio storytelling to arrest ordinary routine. No single staff member has been publicly credited with its invention.
