Origin

Psychologist J.P. Guilford introduced the distinction in his landmark 1950 presidential address to the American Psychological Association, later formalizing it within his Structure of Intellect model (1956). Guilford identified four traits of divergent thinking — fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration — arguing that creativity could not be measured by IQ tests alone.
