Origin
American educational psychologist David Ausubel coined the term in 1960 as part of his broader assimilation theory of meaningful learning. He expanded on the concept in his 1963 book The Psychology of Meaningful Learning, challenging traditional memorization-based education by emphasizing that effective learning requires building connections between new information and existing knowledge structures. Ausubel's advance organizers provide learners with conceptual scaffolding before introducing complex material.
