Origin
French soldiers discovered the stone on July 15, 1799, at Fort Julien near Rashid (Rosetta), Egypt, during Napoleon's campaign. Lieutenant Pierre-François Bouchard recognized the significance of its three scripts — hieroglyphic, Demotic, and Greek — all recording a 196 BC decree. In 1822, Jean-François Champollion used the stone to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphs for the first time in over a millennium.
