Origin

The exact origin of "proxy variable" in statistics is uncertain, though the term emerged as standard methodology in econometrics and social sciences by the mid-20th century. In statistics, a proxy variable serves in place of an unobservable or immeasurable variable, requiring close correlation with the target concept. Common examples include using per-capita GDP as a proxy for quality of life, or standardized test scores as proxies for intelligence. The methodology became formalized through validity criteria including content and construct validity.
