Proving Too Much
Using a form of argument that, if it were valid, could be used to reach an additional, invalid conclusion.

Origin
The fallacy represents a form of reductio ad absurdum (reduction to absurdity), a logical technique dating to Ancient Greek philosophy. Xenophanes of Colophon (c. 570–475 BCE) provided the earliest example in satirical verse. Plato formalized it through Socratic method (elenchus), and Aristotle documented it in Prior Analytics as hê eis to adunaton apagôgê (reduction to the impossible). The specific "proving too much" formulation identifies overly broad arguments that inadvertently support absurd conclusions.
