Prospect-Refuge

A theory that suggests that spaces we find most acceptable to be in present us with great opportunity, yet we must be in a place of safety at the time, i.e. "to see without being seen."

Origin

Proposed by geographer Jay Appleton in his 1975 book The Experience of Landscape. Appleton argued that humans instinctively prefer environments offering both a wide view (prospect) and a sheltered position (refuge) — shaped by our ancestors’ need to spot predators while remaining hidden. It explains why window seats, balconies, and covered patios feel so naturally appealing.
