Pareto Distribution · Zipf's Law

A functional relationship between two quantities, where a relative change in one quantity results in a proportional relative change in the other quantity, independent of the initial size of those quantities.

Origin

Power-law distributions were first characterized mathematically by Vilfredo Pareto in 1896 studying wealth distribution. German physicist Felix Auerbach observed inverse proportionality between city populations and ranks in 1913. French stenographer Jean-Baptiste Estoup noted word frequency patterns in 1916, later studied by linguist George Zipf in 1932, though Zipf never claimed to have originated it. Power laws now appear across physics, biology, economics, and social sciences, describing phenomena from earthquake magnitudes to personal fortunes.
