Origin

From the Latin lucubrare ("to work by artificial light"), itself from lucere ("to shine"). The noun lucubratio referred in ancient Rome to nighttime scholarly labor. The word entered English in the 1590s, and by the 17th century it also denoted the written product of such intense nocturnal study.
