Long Now Thinking
Long Game
A notion of thinking which provides a counterpoint to what it views as today's "faster/cheaper" mindset and to promote "slower/better" thinking.
Origin
Computer scientist Danny Hillis conceived the idea in 1995 of a 10,000-year clock to combat society's shortening sense of the future. In June 1996, Hillis cofounded the Long Now Foundation with Stewart Brand, Kevin Kelly, Brian Eno, Peter Schwartz, and Alexander Rose to build the clock and promote longer-term thinking. Brand explained that the initiative addresses how to "stretch out people's sense of time" as a counterpoint to faster/cheaper mindsets. The Foundation uses five-digit year formats (01998, 01999) to prepare for year 10,000, embodying its commitment to millennial-scale perspectives.
