Origin

Named for Archimedes, who according to Pappus of Alexandria (c. AD 340) declared: "Give me a place to stand and I will move the Earth." René Descartes transformed the image into a philosophical concept in his 1641 Meditations on First Philosophy, seeking "one firm and immovable point" of certainty — which he found in the cogito ("I think, therefore I am") as a foundation for all knowledge.
